Beaches of Messinia

Beaches of Messinia

With its eye-catching coastline, the prefecture of Messinia offers a variety of things to explore to travelers who crave beach hopping, which means going from one beach to another.

The beaches in the city centre that are worth mentioning are few, but the one in Kalamata at the foot of Taygetus is one of them. A dip in the blue flag awarded waters is a good first acquaintance with the Messinian Gulf.

In the southeast of the prefecture, in Exo Mani, Ritsa  is the beautiful and quiet beach of Kardamyli with pebbles and deep blue waters.

In Stoupa and its beach, Kalogria, the golden sand and shallow waters gather large crowds of people during summer. You will find some piece and quiet on the beautiful and free beach of Foneas, with its characteristic large rock cutting it in two.

North of Pylos, is the strongest suit of Messinia in terms of beaches. Voidokilia, with its round shape, is one of the most impressive shores of the Mediterranean with its fine sandy beach surrounding its turquoise waters.

At the southwestern tip of Messinia, and close to Koroni and Methoni, you will find the beach of Finikounta with crystal clear waters and much needed tranquility since it does not attract the crowds that other beaches do.

Elia Beach

Elia Beach is the northernmost beach in Messinia, located in the southern part of the Peloponnese, and it is a favorite destination for thousands of swimmers who enjoy their vacations in its vicinity. Its impressive sandy shore and clear, crystalline waters undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on every visitor.

The beach is located near the city of Kalamata, approximately 45 kilometers northwest of it, and is surrounded by lush greenery, making it an ideal destination for those who want to relax and enjoy the beauty of the natural landscape surrounding it.

Along the upper side of the beach, a dense pine forest stretches, forming a postcard-perfect image straight out of a travel magazine. The beach is organized with sunbeds and umbrellas and caters to water sports enthusiasts such as diving, canoeing, and water skiing.

The beach is also close to taverns, restaurants, cafes, and shops, offering a complete outing experience for those who choose Elia for their dives.

Voidokilia beach

Voidokilia is a beach in Messinia that is considered one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean.

It is famous mainly for its round shape reminiscent of the letter O.

It is located north of Pylos, on the Ionian coast, and adjoins the Gialova lagoon from which it is separated by a dune strip.

The beach and the surrounding area have been characterized as a place of natural beauty and are part of the Natura 2000 Network.

At the southern end of Voidokilia lies Cape Korifasos, where the ruins of the classic city of Pylos were located.

The beach is accessed by a dirt road that runs around the Gialova lagoon, by a dirt road from the village of Petrochori and by a path from Divari beach.

Romanou Beach

Located 15 kilometers northwest of Pylos, in Messinia, is the village of Romanos, just a few hundred meters from the Ionian coast.

The homonymous beach, which locals call Glyfadaki, is a stunning beach with crystal clear blue waters.

These are small beaches, one after the other. Part of the coast is organized, with umbrellas, sun loungers and a beach bar. The rest is free and gives many choices to those who want to enjoy the sun and the sea in peace.

To reach Romanos Beach, starting from Pylos, you pass Gialova and then through the village. The beautiful beach is waiting for you behind olive groves and sand dunes.

Keep in mind that caretta caretta turtles also choose the beach to leave their eggs for hatching in the sand.

Kalamata beach

One of the most beautiful spots in the city of Kalamata  is its beach. The beach of Kalamata is 2.5 km long and you can even get there by walking through the city center and enjoy your swim.

Along Navarinos Avenue, with its large walkway and its palm trees, the blue-flagged beach of Kalamata is lined with light pebbles and deepening smoothly, while being in the center of the closed Messinian Gulf  ensures its warm and quiet waters.

At Kalamata beach there are options for all tastes.

You will find many cafés, pastry shops, restaurants and fish taverns along the way.

Access is free and for the most part it is organized with facilities and services (umbrellas, sun loungers, cabins), where besides swimming there is the possibility of water sports.

At the same time, the coast at Kalamata beach has lifeguards for safer swimming.

The easternmost part of Kalamata beach is considered the best for swimming, and is therefore the busiest. Here the beach is very wide and free.

Finikunda beach

An idyllic 42km coastline stretches between  Methoni    and   Koroni, with each of its many special beaches claiming a place on your schedule.

Finikunda, first and most popular, with its crystalline waters and vast golden sand, is divided into organized and free sections.

Beach of Kalogria

The beach of Kalogria is the most famous, the most crowded and the most organized beach in Messinian Mani.

The beach of Kalogria has umbrellas and loungers, beach volley court, bars, restaurants, water sports, bike and canoe. It is ideal for young people and families with small children.

The beach of Kalogria is located 6.5 km away from Kardamyli .

The families with young children particularly love the big, organized beach of Stoupa (7 kilometers from Kardamyli, in front of the homonymous village) for its clean, shallow, warm waters and the fluffy sand which is ideal for building castles.

Beach of Foneas

The photographed Foneas, with the out of this world emerald waters, the big white pebbles and the gigantic rock that is offered for diving, the hard part is to decide where would you start diving first.

The beach of Foneas is the most favorite of the less known beaches of Western Mani, as it is well “hidden ” at the end of a path between the trees.

Near Foneas (less than a kilometer, to be precise) there is the less impressive but also less crowded Delfinia that has crystal clear waters, fine pebbles, view to an amazing sunset and no organization whatsoever.
