Pounta-Viglafia

‘Pounta’ beach

Pounta is not just the gateway to Elafonisos  it is a standalone destination of unparalleled beauty. With its imposing sand dunes, rare sea cedars, and vast golden sands, Pounta resembles an African landscape in the heart of Laconia.

Here, nature meets archaeology, as the southern end of the beach borders the remains of Pavlopetri, the oldest submerged city in the world.

The Highlights :

Sand Dunes & Cedars : A rare ecosystem creating a "metaphysical" landscape, perfect for exploration and photography.

Pavlopetri : Put on your mask and swim over the visible foundations of a 5,000-year-old prehistoric city – a breathtaking experience.

Surfers' Paradise : The narrow strait between Pounta and Elafonisos is a global meeting point for windsurfing and kite surfing due to its ideal wind conditions.

The Experience Plan (Day by Day) :

Day 1: Exotic Relaxation. Enjoy swimming in the shallow, warm waters and walk among the dunes as the sun begins to set.

Day 2: Snorkeling through History. Dedicate your morning to exploring Pavlopetri and in the afternoon visit Lake Strongyli, a vital wetland located just behind the shore.

Day 3: Gateway to the South. Use Pounta as a base to cross to Elafonisos (just a 9-minute ferry ride) or explore the neighboring village of Viglafia.

Hero Tip : The beach is ideal when a north wind is blowing, as the waters become perfectly calm, revealing all shades of turquoise. If you're lucky, you might spot flamingos in Lake Strongyli during spring!
