Messinia Reimagined

A day spent in olive groves, wineries, and tables set in the heart of nature

The scent of freshly pressed olives, wine that tells stories of centuries past, and air fragrant with the aroma of earth and tradition. This was Friday, July 4th, in Messinia, for those who took part in a different kind of journey: Experiential, agritouristic, and deeply Messinian.

Messinia Development Agency, within the framework of the "Organic Table of Southwestern Greece II-BIO EFFECT GREECE" project, organized an all-day agritourism event featuring four stops at local organic farms. The objective was not a simple tour; it was the experience itself. To touch the earth, to smell the olive leaves, to taste Messinia on the plate and in the glass.

Supported by the experienceskalamata.com platform—which highlights businesses, experiences, and the small wonders of the region—travel agents and thematic tourism professionals from across Greece followed a route centered on sustainability, organic farming, and Messinian flavor.

Olive Trees: The Liquid Gold of Messinia

The first stop was at The Olive Routes in Androusa. There, the olive tree is more than just a crop: it is culture, history, and a way of life. Participants walked through the olive groves, learned about organic cultivation techniques, and took part in workshops focused on—what else?—the fruit that defines life in Messinia.

After all, this is what The Olive Routes represents: an accessible farm dedicated to olive oil and tradition, where visitors have the chance to discover the production process of extra virgin olive oil, tour the groves, and join experiential workshops on the olive and its derivatives.

Next was One & Olive, a state-of-the-art organic olive mill in Trikorfo that goes beyond production. Here, oil is tasted like fine wine, in special glasses and with the ritual it deserves, at an accessible tasting center that promotes organic olive farming and sustainability. One & Olive offers experiences centered on olive growing, olive oil tasting, and its deep-rooted connections to the Mediterranean Diet.

From the Vineyard to the Glass

The next stop had the taste of wine and the aroma of the vineyard: At the Psaroulis Winery in Vasilada, the experience began with a stroll through the vineyards and olive trees that embrace the estate, and concluded with a tasting of wines full of character.

Local and international varieties, knowledge and technology, combined with a deep love for the vine, form the profile of this family winery that blends local tradition with modern winemaking techniques.

Here, visitors have the opportunity to taste wines with character and learn about the region's viticultural history through guided tours that combine knowledge, aromas, and flavors.

The Table was Set at Sterna

The day ended exactly as all Messinian journeys should: gathered around a table. At GreenLand Co-Farming in Sterna—a collaborative agricultural initiative centered on the famous PDO Kalamata Olive—visitors tasted the true hospitality of the land: local delicacies, organic products, and stories told in hushed tones, against the backdrop of the unsurpassed Messinian landscape. Here, guests get a firsthand look at the values of cooperative farming and live an authentic experience of tasting and hospitality around a table rich with local treats.

The Aftertaste The Experiential Agritourism Event by the Messinia Development Agency gifted us a day that proved once more that Messinia is not just a place with exceptional products it is a living experience that connects the visitor with the land, the people, and its roots.

It serves as a reminder that agritourism is not just another term in the theory of thematic tourism, but an act that is experiential, flavorful, and deeply human.
