Palia Historia

Mediterranean cuisine by the river

It is quite rare, therefore very interesting, when it happens to meet a restaurant that becomes the reason to discover a destination, and not the other way around.

That’s the case of Palia Historia (‘Old story’ in English): The tiny Kefalari of Argolis, 5 kilometers outside Argos, is probably a place that you wouldn’t have discovered if any of your friends (or us) hadn’t recommended to dine at Palia Historia.

So you would have missed this jewel-like village, with its impressive church, Zoodochos Pigi (The Life-giving spring), built literally above the river.

Right next to it, at the bank of the river, Palia Historia places its tables there, as long as the weather permits it, to enjoy its delicacies (we’ll give you more information about them in a minute) with a view to the beautiful landscape.

However, we’re not discouraged, even when the weather gets colder: The interior is equally impressive, with atmospheric lights, warm colors, bare rock on some walls and dark colored wood on the floor and the ceiling that all together create an atmosphere of stylish warmth.

The not-so-old history of the restaurant begins on October 2014, when Giorgos and Marinela created this small, delicious miracle that continues until today to gain the impressions of close friends and new visitors, with its amazing Mediterranean cuisine, the juicy grilled meat and the handmade sweets that delightfully close every one of our sumptuous meals here.

We start our culinary trip with small bruschetta with bacon powder and parmesan and fresh mushrooms with estragon and pistachio, tied with sour cream and cream cheese, just to get an idea of what is to follow.

From the main dishes  stands out the delicious pork chops with Gorgonzola cream and cheddar, as well as the juicy burger topped with tomato frame, capper, olives and feta cheese.

However, what steals the show is the pasta: Perfectly executed and served in imaginative combinations that include linguini with pancetta, sun-dried tomatoes and black garlic, authentic carbonara, and chicken with barley, fresh mushrooms flavored with truffle oil, grilled cherry tomatoes and parmesan biscuit.

The relentless carnivores will not be disappointed either.

An entire page of the menu is dedicated to delicious grilled meat:  full-bodied steaks, fluffy burgers, well- grilled chops and large-sized meat varieties for the indecisive.

Whatever you decide to have, you should leave room for the homemade desserts that you can’t miss.

And you won’t want to miss after you take a look at the menu.

For example, chocolate cheesecake with cookie base, rich cream cheese and chocolate, sweet of the spoon and pistachio.

Or crispy Panorama Triangles, filled with praline and custard, on a peanut butter and caramel base, served with Madagascar vanilla ice cream and bourbon. Has anybody fainted or are we all still following?

Palia Historia is open all days of the week, early in the morning for coffee and sweet, and from noon till night for dinner, in an idyllic landscape, by the river, whether the weather permits tables outside or not.
