Just 5 km south of Argos, in the village of Kefalari, is the impressive Temple of Zoodochos Pigi. Impressive first because it is in an area where the greenery and the waters of the historic Erasin River make it magnificent. And secondly because the temple is built inside a cave.
Inside the cave, 110 meters deep, a pilgrimage called Calvary has been built. In the same cave there is a rock that hangs from the ceiling and stops just above the ground.
In 1972 excavations were made in the cave, which revealed findings from the Paleolithic era. At the present site of the temple, there was an older temple. It was 16 meters long, 6 meters wide and 4 meters high.
Nine of the 16 meters of its length were inside the cave. This temple was destroyed on May 28, 1918 by a powerful explosion at an ammunition depot near the temple. After the destruction of the old temple, many Argians were active in the construction of a new temple.
In this effort, immigrants in America made the most of their efforts to raise $ 15,000. With this money in 1924 the new Temple of Zoodochos Pigi was completed.
The magnificent Zoodochos Pigi church in Kefalari celebrates the Day of the Restoration (on Friday after Easter). On this day a great feast is held and the faithful visit the temple from all parts of Greece
