So, let's say it straight, as truths should be told without beating around the bush. The iconic King Minos Hotel is built on the hill, which is encircled by the highway, so you are right in the heart of the action (a 4-minute walk from the beach) but also enjoy peace and quiet.
The Georgidakis family's luxury hotel overlooks the entire settlement, its beaches, the sparkling sea in front of it, and the three green islands that close the bay, as if someone had placed them there to adorn it.
From the large balconies of the rooms overlooking the sea, the sunrise is spectacular – and a good reason to start your day early even on vacation: In the foreground is the hotel's impressive pool, with statues inspired by ancient myths, and in the background is the tranquility that reigns in the streets of Tolo, which hasn’t woken up yet.
And in the town’s background, the waters are painted pink and gold by the first gentle rays of the sun, and turquoise by the pine forests of the islands reflected on their surface. It’s pure summer magic.
Don't be surprised, this is what Tolo used to be called – back when it was inhabited by refugees who came to the newly established Greek state from Crete, which remained part of the Ottoman Empire.
This explains the name of the King Minos Hotel, and this is how the story of the Georgidakis family begins when a few years later, in 1940, grandfather Konstantinos Georgidakis married grandmother Kalliopi, of the Bikaki family—he was a fisherman, like most residents of Tolo, and she was a cook.
The two of them ran the family tavern, next to which they would later build, after the difficult war years, their first six rooms, which would initially accommodate the few visitors to Tolo, whose numbers would gradually increase in number thanks to the first performances at the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus.
These six rooms would become the family's first hotel, one of the first two hotels built in Tolo in the 1960s. Today, the Georgidakis family, currently in their third generation, has successfully created one of the largest tourism businesses in Argolis, with a total of five hotels and studios.
One of the family's five hotels, King Minos opened its doors in 1999, and since then it has never stopped being remodeled, being inspiring and being inspired by the uniqueness of its location, by the light of the Argolic land and the deep belief in hospitality that has been passed down from generation to generation.
In all areas of the hotel, attention to even the smallest detail is evident: from the interesting library and pool table in the lobby to the pool bar tables, which are perfect for a night drink before you go up to your room, where the super comfortable mattresses combined with the dreamlike tranquility that reigns guarantee the perfect sleep you so desperately need.
Breakfast is a reason to look forward to waking up and getting out of bed: light years away from the standard hotel buffets, is renewed daily so that you never get bored, and includes sweet and savory delicacies such as the “dakakia” (rusks topped with tomatoes and feta cheese) that stole the show on one of the two days we stayed there, the baked omelet with sausages and peppers, and the freshly baked pastries that are pure delight.
At lunchtime and in the evening, at the tables spread outside beside the pool or in the cool indoor area with large windows overlooking the sea, you can also enjoy the creations of chef Socrates Sgouros, which include pasta with chicken, porcini mushrooms, and truffle oil, shrimp risotto with ouzo, and fried squid with white tarama mousse for a dip.
The hotel also offers a sauna and gym, as well as massage services (therapeutic, athletic, relaxing, and so on) for a holistic wellness experience.
The variety of rooms ensures that you will definitely find what you are looking for: From four king suites on the 5th floor with sun loungers on the terraces, to bright and comfortable double rooms that enjoy views of either the mountains or the sea, and from there to the two-bedroom apartments that are very popular with families and to the five-bedroom apartments that are perfect for groups of friends or younger children. The only difficult thing here is choosing which one you prefer.
