10 Landmark Locations and Experiences in Kalamata

Του Σπύρου Σμυρνή

I don’t know about you, dear reader, but I personally  have a particular weakness for Kalamata.   I won’t dig into its history, nor will I write lengthy tributes to its dozens of sights.

Instead, I will simply share with you certain moments I experienced there—moments that became lifelong memories.

These are 10 landmark locations and experiences that you, too, will look forward to encountering and reliving once you find yourself, for the first time, in these "Kalamatian" places.

Coffee at Kastraki Drinking a coffee at Kastraki is something you will remember for a lifetime. With an idyllic view of the beach that you’ll capture in dozens of photos—only to find yourself unable to choose which one is the best—it is an experience that stays with you forever.

Sunset at Verga Nearby, in Verga, you will stop to enjoy the most beautiful sunset in the city—a scene that looks as if it were plucked from a famous painting. If you have the right photography equipment with you, you will capture an entire album of the explosion of natural colors gifted to you by this magnificent landscape.

Paragliding in Ano Verga If you are an extreme sports enthusiast, you will fall in love with Ano Verga, where you can go paragliding on Mount Taygetos. With a paraglider and a qualified instructor by your side, you will live one of the most extraordinary experiences of your life.

Tricky Beach Bar There are beach bars, and then there is Tricky. An essential stop to enjoy your cocktail right by the waves before taking the plunge into the crystal-clear waters of the beach. Here, your mind hits "pause," allowing you to savor every moment at Tricky  while gazing at the endless blue and the majestic Mount Taygetos.

The Castle of Kalamata The city’s majestic Castle, standing proudly above the Nedon River, is a place you will find yourself wanting to walk through again and again. Built in 1208 by William II Villehardouin, it served as the inspiration for Angelos Terzakis’ famous novel about Princess Isabeau, who once lived here.

You’ll find yourself checking your watch every now and then, as time seems to stand still here, bowing to the sheer beauty of creation. If you visit during the summer, you might be lucky enough to catch a concert or a theatrical performance at the small open-air theater located at its southern tip.

The Old Town Nestled just below the Castle lies the historic center, or the famous "Old Town," as locals and visitors affectionately call it. Wandering through its narrow alleys from end to end is an absolute must.

Your attention will be drawn to the stone-built churches, such as the Byzantine Chapel of the Holy Apostles and the imposing Church of Ypapanti. You will fall in love with the city’s neoclassical mansions and grand estates, while at Ypapanti Square, you’ll find yourself feeling like a child again.

Souvlaki at Tzimis Right on the square of the historic Holy Apostles, across from the Archaeological Museum and next to Amfeia Square (the old "Quilt-makers" district), lies a small, traditional souvlaki spot in the heart of the old market. Resembling a vintage van, it is worshipped as a temple by souvlaki lovers from around the world.

As you enjoy your souvlaki sitting on traditional hand-woven "kourelou" rugs, you’ll find yourself gazing at old signs for mattresses and quilts, and a manual meat grinder unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Leaving, you’ll surely be whispering to yourself: "It was at Tzimis where I fell in love, while eating souvlaki."

Municipal Railway Park After leaving the Old Town behind, head toward the Municipal Railway Park, another hallmark of Kalamata. It is the only open-air museum of its kind in Greece and is renowned among railway enthusiasts worldwide.

Historic steam engines and carriages from various eras are displayed within a lush, green environment that, beyond being a museum, serves as an excellent recreational park for visitors of all ages.

Ancient Messene Whether you are a history buff or not, a stop at  Ancient Messene  is deemed absolutely essential, as it is considered one of the most significant and historic archaeological sites in the Peloponnese. Many describe it as the "Pompeii of Greece," thanks to its amphitheatrical layout and the magnificent discoveries unearthed there.

Santova Beach If you’re looking for a swim near Kalamata, then write the name Santova in bold letters in your notes. Without a doubt, this is a stunning little beach with crystal-blue waters, just a twenty-minute drive from the city.

If you’re a fan of night swimming, you will absolutely adore it, as it is famous for the small bonfires lit on the sand by aspiring "Robinson Crusoes" right by the edge of the waves.
