Where matter turns into art: An authentic journey of creativity

DEAR EDUCATORS

On the road from Mycenae to Nafplio, an old factory and poultry farm has been transformed into a vibrant art gallery. Within these walls, art truly comes to life.

As you travel towards Nafplio, near the village of Monastiraki, you will encounter the Trojan Horse. This impressive structure is the work of local artist Stelios Maragos. As Stelios himself explains, this Trojan Horse has two faces: one made of iron, representing the fierce and rugged side of life, and one made of wood, representing the earthy and human side—much like life and humanity today.

A father of a large family, Stelios grew up working in his parents' pottery workshop. Fourteen years ago, he discovered this abandoned poultry farm and envisioned an art and creation space—a lifelong dream.

The idea for the Trojan Horse was born when he found a massive, rusted food transport screw at the back of the building. It became the "tail" of the horse, and for over a decade, he collected reclaimed objects to complete this masterpiece.

THE TROJAN HORSE & THE MESSAGE OF ART

The Trojan Horse is just one of many exhibits at Silo Art Factory. Through art, the space invites visitors to discover a philosophy that harmonizes nature with modern living. Another significant work is Atlas—a variation of the classic myth where the Earth is covered in thorns, and Atlas is ready to cast it away. Through this, Stelios helps young students understand the critical state of our world: wars, the refugee crisis, climate change, and economic instability.

Everything is crafted from recyclable materials, teaching the importance of repurposing old objects instead of discarding them, to build a better world.

AN IDEAL EDUCATIONAL DESTINATION

The workshop offers pottery classes for children and adults alike (from ages 3 to 103!). Students can experience ancient crafts firsthand, learning how ceramic vessels were created in Ancient Greece. This makes Silo Art Factory an ideal stop for school trips, especially given its close proximity to the archaeological site of Mycenae.

In the spacious workshops, guided by expert instructors, visitors can :

Be initiated into the art of painting.

Craft ceramic objects using traditional tools.

Learn the history of pottery and the civilization built upon this magnificent, malleable material.

This innovative educational program is designed for Primary, Middle, and High School students, as well as any art lover. Programs last between 1 to 1.5 hours and are held daily (weekends by appointment).

For five consecutive years, Stelios has offered this experiential workshop of history and culture within a beautifully landscaped 10-acre estate, surrounded by golden-green olive groves and fragrant orange trees, welcoming schools from all over Greece and Europe.
