7 days in North Kynouria

In the northern part of Kynouria, an aristocratic Arcadian lady who claims a week of your holidays, your eye will be full of beauty. After all, there you will find lovely little villages, lacy beaches, unforgettable sunsets and a place that balances wonderfully between green and deep blue.

When you find yourself in North Kynouria, make sure your schedule is free and flexible, so that you can enjoy all its beauties in a trip whose memories will accompany you for years to come. In seven days, we've laid out an enviable road trip worth organising.

Day 1 Kosmas

Kosmas is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful villages of Parnonas and an excellent reason to visit North Kynouria. In the village's plantain-covered square, it is worth stopping by and enjoying the picturesque little houses of the area and the hospitality of its smiling inhabitants.

Kosmas is the starting point for some of the most beautiful hiking trails of the entire Peloponnese, worth walking even if you consider yourself a beginner. One of the most beautiful and most passable is the one that goes to Potistres and Kato Ai Giorgis, encountering plenty of running water and dense fir forests.

Day 2 Kastanitsa

We continue our village hopping with Kastanitsa which is very close to Kosmas and impresses the visitor with the brown roofs of its houses and their coloured shutters that look like a painting as they are perched on one of the steepest slopes of Parnonas, as if they are straddling between heaven and earth.

Kastanitsa is the oldest of the region's Tsakoni villages, with many locals speaking the Tsakonian dialect when boasting about the area's fairytale chestnut forest. It hosts the Chestnut Festival every year with crowds of people flocking to enjoy the famous goodies of the region.

Day 3 Paralio Astros

Paralio Astros is rightly considered by many the pride of North Kynouria. You see, it is rare to find a place like this, since there you will find a huge beach that stretches for kilometers and clear, almost crystal clear waters.

As if that weren't enough, the road will bring you before a natural to Cycladic cartpostal harbour that the locals rightly call "Island" thanks to its star-shaped formation, which gives us the most beautiful promenade in the city. Where the "old" part of Astros ends, the modern part begins, with plenty of picturesque alleys, tile-roofed houses, and musky taverns that turn Astros into the ultimate tourist resort of the region.

On the southeastern side of Astros, the wetland of Lake Moustos attracts thousands of nature loving visitors who immortalize the unparalleled beauty of the landscape. At 4 kilometres away from Astros, the famous Monastery of Loukous will also be visible.

Day 4 Agios Petros

Agios Petros is the mountain village of North Kynouria, which has experienced tremendous tourist growth in recent years, thanks to its beauties, which will satisfy its visitors all year round. Cool accommodation, traditional taverns and shops with local products give many choices to the travelers who will find themselves in Agios Petros.

Once there, it is worth visiting the Tower of Trikalitis, as well as the church of the Apostles Peter and Paul in the small village square. Another obligatory stop is the one at the 18th century Tower of Agas and the old carpet factory, which impresses with its architecture.

Day 5 Agios Ioannis

At an altitude of 720 meters you will meet Agianni as the locals used to call the green village of North Kynouria on the "sides" of Parnonas. Stone mansions, narrow streets and Byzantine churches (of Agios Georgios and Prodromos) compose an almost painted scenery.

At a distance of 4 km you will find the famous waterfalls of Lepida, where the more adventurous ones try their luck in canyoning and rappelling. In summer the festivals and dances are going on with visitors tasting the delicious local products of the area. From there it is worth walking to the beautiful cedar forest of Malevi Monastery, which is one of the most historic monasteries of Arcadia.

Day 6 Kastri- Agios Andreas

On one side is Kastri, the main village of Kastritochoria, hidden in a charming forest, full of cherry trees, plane trees, chestnut trees, gurgling waters, springs and traditional fountains. Those who have been there speak of one of the most beautiful places in the whole of Arcadia.

On your walks you will encounter many well-preserved remnants of the great folk culture of the region. Pilgrimages, watermills, threshing floors and traditional houses greet you before you move on to the legendary Monastery of Timios Prodromos. On the other hand, Agios Andreas is the head village of Tsaconia, a crossroads for travellers arriving in the region.

Near its small harbour you can see the ruins of ancient Anthini, of great archaeological interest, and the monastery of the Monastery of Orthokostas. The stone-built arched bridge on the river Vraciatis should not be missing from the photo album of your tour of the places of Agios Andreas, before heading to the beaches of North Kynouria.

Day 7 Achinganos- Arcadian Village- Portes- Anavalou

Achinganos is one of the most beautiful beaches of North Kynouria with a long sandy beach and fine pebbles, suitable for all ages who flock either to the umbrellas of the organized part of the beach or to the shade offered by the tamarisks and poplars.

Our coastal excursion continues to the small beach of the Arcadian village with its crystal clear and deep blue waters, before we reach Portes with its thick and welcoming sandy beach.

The otherworldly beauty of Anavalos beach will delight those looking for a quiet dip, while at Xiropigado you will enjoy the harmony of natural colours that create a setting straight out of a travel guide.
